So yesterday came the shock news that Lostprophets frontman Ian Watkins is being held, along with two legally unnamed women, on charges including conspiring to sexually abuse minors (including a one year old girl), as well as possessing, making, and distributing indecent images. He also stands accused of possessing extreme animal porn and has been refused bail.
To some, like the authors of these comments, this news will come as no surprise. It was certainly a shock for his band members, so said in a statement ‘…we find ourselves in a state of shock. We are learning about the details of the investigation along with you. It is a difficult time for us and our families, and we want to thank our fans for their support as we seek answers. Signed, Jamie, Lee, Luke, Mike and Stu.’.
I was never a massive fan of the band, liking a few of their hits, but I was in the minority of my group. Around about the time their second album came out, I had a friend who would try to copy his styles, another friend’s band who would cover ‘Burn Burn’, and countless friends who would play it on their phones and chorus in with ‘Woo!’ at the start. We weren’t the only ones, obviously, as they’ve sold 3.5 million albums worldwide, won several Kerrang! awards, and even cracked the UK Top Ten twice. At a time when their style of music was becoming a lot more popular and mainstream, they found themselves with a large following of young teens and a whole lot of attention. If he is found guilty, then he’ll have betrayed all of that, as well as the parents trust in allowing their children to see his band and meet him, which from talking to my own mum about letting me off to a gig on my own at 17 is a huge thing. He was trusted an ambassador for his band, genre, and music, and if guilty, he’s fucked that up and ruined a lot of innocent lives, including his victims, friends, etc.
However, there is a chance that he will be found innocent; he’s certainly denying the claims. Amongst the dark rumours are tales of innocence and kindness. For example, this Tumblr post depicts a genuine story of kindness. Seeing as he’ll be appearing in front of Cardiff crown court on the 31st December, hopefully we won’t have to wait too long to find out.
We can’t forget that the victims are the most important part of this, however. If this is true, then there could be hundreds of young fans out there that have been abused and thought it was okay. It isn’t. It is never okay. If you know anyone that may be a victim, or anyone who has had any experience like this with Watkins or anyone else for that matter, please get them to call Operation Globe incident room on 0800 056 0154 (if it’s Watkins related), or the NSPCC on 0800 389 5347.
They’ll be updates when I find them. In the meantime, take care of one another. You never know who might be affected by stories such as this.
